What are the ISU Figure Skating World Championships? Everything You Need to Know

The ISU Figure Skating World Championships 2027 will take place in Tampere, Finland for the very first time in history March 16-21, 2027. 


What Are the ISU Figure Skating World Championships? 

  • At the ISU Figure Skating World Championships, the World’s best figure skaters come together to compete for the World titles
  • World Champions and medalists will be crowned in four disciplines
  • The four disciplines are: Women’s Singles, Men’s Singles, Pair Skating and Ice Dance
  • A total of 12 medals will be awarded: a set of gold, silver and bronze in each discipline
  • Around 50 ISU members participate and send their best athletes

What is the history of the ISU Figure Skating World Championships?

  • The ISU Figure Skating World Championships have been held since 1896
  • At the first ISU Figure Skating World Championships, only Men competed. The Women’s event was included in 1906, Pair Skating was added in 1908 and Ice Dance in 1952

Who is competing at the ISU Figure Skating World Championships? 

  • ISU Figure Skating World Champions and Olympic Figure Skating Champions and medalists, accomplished veterans and exciting newcomers will take the ice to compete
  • The national federations enter their top skaters
  • To assure the highest level of competition, the ISU requires a minimum technical score for participants
  • Skaters must be 17 years of age by July 1, 2026 to be eligible
  • There is no maximum age

What to expect at the ISU Figure Skating World Championships?

  • The World’s best figure skaters show a Short Program/Rhythm Dance and Free Skating/Free Dance.
  • The ISU Figure Skating World Championships are the culmination of the skating season and the athletes arrive at the peak of their form and with refined programs
  • Expect a great show of exciting performances, music and top-class entertainment
